The famous Strasbourg Christmas Market is one of the most renowned in the world. As the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg transforms into a magical wonderland during the Advent season (the four Sundays leading up to Christmas), welcoming over 2 million visitors in just one month.
As night falls, the city’s enchanting atmosphere truly comes to life. The glow of decorated shop windows, twinkling street lights, and colorful market stalls blend with the festive aromas of mulled wine and spices, while Christmas carols echo from the churches. Strolling through the beautifully adorned streets is an unforgettable experience, especially for Christmas lovers.
Originally known as the Christkindelsmärik ("Market of the Infant Jesus"), the Strasbourg Christmas Market has existed since 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe. During the Middle Ages, it was a grand annual fair where merchants from afar would sell handcrafted dolls, toys, candles, spices, and sweets.
Over the centuries, the market’s location and offerings evolved with the times. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, the rise of mass consumerism and shopping malls nearly led to its decline. In 1987, Kaysersberg (a small town in Alsace) revived the tradition by launching its own Christmas market, emphasizing authenticity and carefully selected artisanal products. This initiative was a huge success and inspired the famous campaign “Christmas has a homeland: Alsace”.
Riding this wave of enthusiasm, Strasbourg officially declared itself the “Capital of Christmas” in 1992. Since then, the Christmas market has grown into an iconic event, attracting more visitors each year while showcasing the city’s historical heritage, stunning decorations, and breathtaking light displays.
Every year, the market evolves to offer a more authentic Christmas spirit to visitors from around the world, with an ever-growing selection of cultural and festive events.
🎄 The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (Opening of the Market)
🎶 The Four Advent Concerts (One every Sunday before Christmas)
🚋 Tram Lines A, B, D, E, and F provide easy access to the city center.
